The Cloud Engineer Hiring Problem Nobody Talks About

Cloud is no longer optional. Every Indian startup, every product company, every enterprise going through digital transformation needs cloud infrastructure. The demand for cloud engineers in India has never been higher.

The problem is that cloud engineering is also one of the easiest roles to fake on a resume.

AWS, GCP, and Azure all run certification programs. These certifications are well-designed courses. They are not proof that someone can architect a production system, manage costs at scale, or debug a broken Kubernetes cluster at 2am. The Indian job market is flooded with candidates who have completed these courses and list them prominently on their resume.

When you post a cloud engineer role and get 200 applications, almost every resume will include at least one certification. The certifications tell you almost nothing about who can actually do the job.

This is the hiring problem you need to solve in 2026.

What Cloud Engineers Actually Do

Cloud engineering covers a wide range of responsibilities. Before hiring, you need to know which of these you actually need.

Infrastructure provisioning. Setting up compute, storage, networking, and databases in a cloud environment using infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or Pulumi. This is the baseline. A cloud engineer who cannot write Terraform is not ready for production work.

Cost optimisation. Cloud bills grow fast if nobody manages them. A good cloud engineer monitors resource usage, identifies waste, right-sizes instances, and implements cost controls. Indian startups routinely overpay for cloud by 30 to 50 percent because their cloud engineer does not actively manage costs.

Security and access control. IAM roles, security groups, VPC configuration, secrets management. A misconfigured S3 bucket or overly permissive IAM role is how data breaches happen. Cloud security is not optional.

CI/CD pipeline management. Connecting code deployments to cloud infrastructure. GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, or similar tools. The cloud engineer and the backend team need to work together here.

Kubernetes and container orchestration. For companies past early stage, managing containerised workloads on EKS, GKE, or AKS is now standard. This is a distinct and deeper skill than just knowing Docker.

Monitoring and incident response. CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, PagerDuty. When production goes down, the cloud engineer needs to diagnose and fix it fast.

Most Indian startups need someone who can do the first three well and grow into the rest. Do not hire an enterprise-scale Kubernetes expert when you are still on a single EC2 instance.

Why Certifications Are Not Enough

AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect are genuinely useful credentials. They mean the candidate studied the platform, understands the services, and passed a multiple-choice exam.

They do not mean the candidate has ever:

  • Built and torn down a production VPC from scratch
  • Debugged a memory leak in a containerised application
  • reduced a cloud bill by 40 percent without impacting reliability
  • Responded to a security incident caused by a misconfigured IAM role
  • Set up a multi-region failover that actually works under real traffic

These are the things that matter in production. You cannot learn them from a certification course. You learn them by building real systems and breaking them.

What to Actually Test When Hiring a Cloud Engineer

Give them a Terraform task. Ask them to write a Terraform configuration that provisions a basic web application infrastructure: a VPC, public and private subnets, an EC2 instance or ECS service, a load balancer, and an RDS database. Do not tell them the exact specifications. See what questions they ask. See what defaults they choose. See whether they think about security from the start or add it as an afterthought.

Ask about a cloud incident they handled. Real cloud engineers have stories. The S3 bucket that was accidentally made public. The EC2 instance that ran out of disk space at 3am. The Lambda function that started timing out under load. If they cannot describe a specific incident they diagnosed and resolved, they have not done real cloud work.

Probe their cost management thinking. Ask: "We are spending ₹4 lakh per month on AWS. What is your process for identifying where we can cut that?" A strong cloud engineer will talk about reserved instances, right-sizing, S3 lifecycle policies, identifying unused resources, and monitoring with Cost Explorer. A weak one will say they would look at the bill and see what stands out.

Ask about their security defaults. What IAM principle do they follow when setting up a new service? What do they do with secrets? How do they ensure developers do not have overly permissive access in production? Security thinking should be automatic, not something they have to be reminded about.

Salaries are higher in Bangalore and Hyderabad. Remote roles have compressed this gap slightly but senior cloud engineers in Bangalore still command a premium.
