Give them a broken contract to audit. Take a simple ERC-20 or NFT contract and introduce two or three real vulnerabilities: a missing access control check, a reentrancy window, an integer underflow. Ask them to find what is wrong. A real smart contract developer will identify these. Someone who learned from tutorials will not know what to look for.

Ask them to write a contract from scratch in front of you. Not a complex DeFi protocol. Something basic: a simple escrow that holds ETH and releases it when both parties agree, or a basic voting contract. Tell them to write it in their editor with no AI assistance. Watch how they structure it, what modifiers they add, how they handle access control, and whether they think about edge cases unprompted.

Ask about a security issue they caught in their own code. Real smart contract developers have stories about bugs they caught before deployment. If they cannot name one, they have either not built real contracts or they deployed buggy code and got lucky.

Test their tooling knowledge. Ask what testing framework they use and why. Ask how they deploy to mainnet and how they manage private keys securely. Ask what gas optimisation techniques they have used. Ask how they use a block explorer to debug a failed transaction. These questions separate people who build from people who watch tutorials.

Ask about a protocol they have studied in depth. Real blockchain developers are students of the space. They read protocol documentation, follow audits, and understand how existing protocols are designed. Ask them to explain how Uniswap V2 pricing works, or what an AMM invariant is, or how Chainlink oracle feeds are secured. If they cannot engage with any of this, they are not deep in the space.
